GeoAlberta

GeoAlberta is western Canada's premier annual geospatial conference.  This event draws upwards to 300 guests.  The conference is organized by the combined effort of two professional organizations - The AGG and URISA.  This year, we are celebrating its 16th year on November 13 and 14!

In addition to the educational presentations and tradeshow GeoAlberta is known for, sharing and networking with your industry peers and clients will be a key part of the event. Join Geomatics industry movers and shakers in special interest group breakout sessions, meet and mingle lunch hours, and interactive group workshops. These new sessions will cover the myriad of ways we’re using Geomatics and GIS in our various fields, from utilities to oil and gas to unmanned aerial vehicles. We hope these conversations will spill out into informal discussions in our designated networking and sharing spaces for further collaboration.

GeoAlberta 2019 will be the industry’s top knowledge-sharing opportunity in Western Canada. With surveyors, GIS specialists, municipalities, oil and gas, planners, and governmental policy makers all under one roof, there’s plenty of opportunity to hear about the newest applications of technology and where the industry is headed.

Throughout the conference, you can engage with a broader industry audience as we live tweet with the hashtag #GeoAlberta.

So next November 13-14, come to GeoAlberta 2019 with your best ideas, innovative projects, and tough questions. Having so many of Alberta’s top Geomatics and GIS minds in one place, we’re sure to have the answer.

  • AGG Speaker Series Events - Networking and Presentation Opportunities

The AGG routinely offers a chance for you to network and learn about a business/project in the Geomatics fields - The AGG Speaker Series.  These events are normally held from 5 pm to 7 pm at a local pub/eatery and include a presentation, discussion, appetizers and a chance to talk to your peers.  Appetizers are complimentary and covered on behalf of the sponsoring presenter/organization.  We look forward to seeing you at our next AGG Speaker Series!

Over this past year, we received some great news all due to our Speaker Series.  Read the below from Garrett Duffy of Decisive Farming.

"After emigrating to Calgary with my young family in summer 2015, I found it difficult to find a job in geomatics.  The downturn in the economy did not help my job search much but I eventually got full-time work as a cartographer at Map World Services 2000.  I continued to make concerted efforts at networking, attending some useful GoGeomatics events and becoming a member of Alberta Geomatics Group.  I applied for numerous positions at surveying and geomatics services companies around Calgary including a Junior GIS Technician position at Decisive Farming that was advertised in November 2017.  I was not called for interview, possibly because I was perceived as being over-qualified.  In February 2018, I attended the AGG Speaker Series at Brewsters in Calgary at which Andrew Pylypchuk gave a great talk about micro satellites and earth observation.  Over a few beers, I learned that Vincent Pang and Sean Chew of Decisive Farming were in the room; I introduced myself and arranged an introductory meeting at their offices in Calgary later that month.  Eventually, a position for Senior GIS Technician, with an emphasis on research, was advertised in late 2018 and, thanks to my networking and follow-up at the AGG events, I secured the position.  I would like to thank Alberta Geomatics Group for providing networking opportunities to job seekers such as myself and encourage them to continue same."

If interested in presenting and sponsorship participation in our AGG Speaker Series, please do not hesitate to contact the AGG for more details.  This is a perfect opportunity for our members to be more involved, provide a description of your business and its accomplishments, what you do, or talk about a special project while in a relaxed atmosphere that allows for networking after your presentation.  Sponsorship covers the cost of the appetizers - generally $250.  We look forward to hearing from you!
